Orbeez.com – A web presence for a mobile application on the iPhone and iPod Touch. Recently, we launched a mobile application for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch named Orbeez – The Great Orange Escape. While we’ve already covered the application itself in a previous case study, there was an entirely separate aspect to the project, and that was building a web presence around it. We set out to design and build a site that would both promote sales of iPhone software, but also provide additional details about the game.
Our Approach
We approached the design of the Orbeez.com web presence from two directions. First, we wanted a site that was easy to read from the iPhone web browser. Second, we wanted a fast and clean looking site that outlined all the features of the game, while at the same time providing easy access for interested buyers to go to the iTunes store and purchase the game directly from the website. To encourage communication from the community, we also wanted to setup a Twitter account so users can keep up with developments in the game.
Our Expertise
To accomplish our goals, we used a combination of PHP, CSS, AJAX, jQuery, MySQL, and Flash. We started by building the site to fit cleanly and readably on an iPhone web browser screen. Next, we made all links and navigation items larger sized, so they are easy to see and to click when browsing the site from a mobile browser. Lastly, we made sure the content of every page was clean and not cluttered with information, so those with smaller screens would not get lost trying to dig through the data. To help improve the salesmanship of the site, we embedded a flash based video player to demonstrate the game real time to visitors in an online demo. Each page is also clearly linked to the download page so users who have found Orbeez interesting, will not have to hunt to find where they can get it. Finally, we created a Twitter page with a customized background where users can communicate with us.
Our Results
This site is currently only a few weeks old, but so far has already driven several sales directly to the iTunes store. The site is very easy to use from mobile browsers and has been listed in several online CSS galleries because of it’s clean and professional design. Our hope is that this site will continue to drive customers to the app store for our application for many years to come.
