URLAppraisal.net – How much is your site worth? For this site, we wanted to setup an online resource that anyone could use to get a rough estimate on the approximate value of their domain name. Using various different metrics, including Alexa, Compete.com, and various Google and Yahoo API’s our hope was to setup a tool that appealed to a wide range of users when attempting to gauge the worth of their domain names.

Our Approach

Previously, finding out a good estimate of what your website might be worth was not an easy task. Often, users were forced to individually examine dozens of metrics to approximate a value that was often incorrect. Our approach was to build an easy to use, friendly tool to help make the process painless. In order to provide information obtained by the many different tools and APIs this site utilized, we wanted to build a user friendly AJAX based interface that would query each of the different resources simultaneously. Each statistic compiled would then filter into a single pool and be used to determine the overall estimate for a given site. In terms of user interface, the site was designed to be easy to search and quick to find results without getting lost in a complicated site structure.

Our Expertise

To build out the service, we started by designing an algorithm that could analyze dozens of website details and drill down to an estimated price based on the results. Using AJAX and JQuery, we created dozens of modules that connected to services such as Alexa, Google, Yahoo, Whois, Compete.com, etc and automatically queried for relevant details about a particular website. Due to the asynchronous aspects of AJAX, we were able to query each of these services simultaneously so while a large array of communication was being completed, it didn’t take that long from the users perspective. Finally, with all the data in hand, we used our algorithm to generate an estimated website value, which was then compared to other sites previously entered in our database to ensure that the final number is consistent to other similar resources.

Our Results

Overall, this site has been a huge success both for us and for our many users. At the moment of this writing, URL Appraisal has appraised more than 90,000 unique websites and has performed more than 1 million total appraisals in just over a year and a half since it was launched. To this day, it still stands as one of the most comprehensive platforms for analyzing and appraising web domains and for estimating the worth of a domain name.
